Engineering challenge
Mibrih Road is a mountain alignment in which the carriageway is constrained by steep natural slopes and engineered cuttings. Instability, rockfall and excavation effects on adjacent ground are the controlling risks—not pavement thickness.
Analysis and design approach
DFEC’s work focused on reading the rock mass, identifying failure mechanisms that matter at the scale of the road, and translating that into design and construction advice. Mapping and photogrammetry informed kinematic assessment; design recommendations covered reinforcement, surface protection and drainage where they were justified by the mechanism.
Recommended measures
- Engineering geological mapping of cuttings and natural slopes
- Stability assessment of mechanism-specific rock and soil slopes
- Specified stabilisation measures for execution by the contractor
- Technical support during excavation and installation
Outcome
Stabilisation was targeted at identified mechanisms, giving the contractor a design that could be built and the owner a record of why each measure was required.
